The Ears of the Deaf Shall Be Unstopped

This meditation is based on a passage for December 24, 2010 in the Daily Lectionary Year 1 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).

Text: Isaiah 35:1-10

Reflection and Question: This is such a lovely reminder of God’s heavenly Kingdom whose coming is anticipated in the birth of Jesus. The God-enforced deafness and blindness declared in God’s call to Isaiah that we read a few weeks ago is ended. The ability of the people to relate to God will be restored. The return of God’s people to Zion will be safe and full of joy. The lush, peaceful, harmonious place described here fits with the scene of the Holy Family, the animals, the shepherds and the magic of this night, Christmas Eve. What brings you joy and gladness tonight?

Prayer: Energize the limp hands, strengthen the rubbery knees.
Tell fearful souls, “Courage! Take Heart!
God is here, right here, on his way to put things right
And redress all wrongs. He’s on his way! He’ll save you!”
